Science

Fairwater Science Department is highly successful both in results where in 2013 we achieved a 93% pass rate at level 2 (GCSE & BTEC).

We are similarly successful at Key Stage 3 where last year’s Year 9 achieve 94% level 5 and above and at Key Stage 5 where A’ Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Physics attract a large number of students. We also offer a vocational route for students in the Sixth Form through our new Level 3 Applied Science course which is also attracting large numbers of pupils.

Key Stage 3

In Year 7 Science pupils are given a general introduction to investigative Science, lab safety and follow the Spotlight Science scheme which encompasses many key areas of Science including living things, space, electricity, acids and alkalis, sex education, reactivity etc.

At Key stage 4 we now offer 4 routes:

  • Triple Award (Separate Sciences). These are taught as 3 separate subjects; Biology, Chemistry and Physics and pupils gain 3 separate GCSEs following the WJEC course.
  • Double Award Science. This is taught as 3 separate subjects; Biology, Chemistry and Physics with pupils gaining 2 GCSEs over 2 yearlong courses, Science and Additional Science, again with WJEC.
  • Single Award Science. This is taught as 3 separate subjects; Biology, Chemistry and Physics with pupils gaining 1 GCSEs over 2 year course, again with WJEC.

Key Stage 5

Biology (AS/A2)
Biology A’ Level in Fairwater is both successful and popular with many pupils going on to study biological sciences, medicine, veterinary sciences or other related subjects in university.
We follow the OCR AS / A2 syllabus with pupils gaining an AS at the end of Year 12, with the option of continuing to A2 in Year 13.

OCR A’ LEVEL BIOLOGY – specification, past papers and mark schemes.

We also encourage our pupils to apply for the Nuffield Scholarship programme between years 12 & 13 to gain hands on research experience in a UK university and a CREST Award. This is a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to gain real university research experience, build up a body of work for university application and to meet other pupils with similar interests and goals.

This year Jessica Paul was successful in gaining the scholarship which allowed her to research the salicylic acid content in different plants over her summer holidays at Aberystwyth University.

NUFFIELD SCHOLARSHIP

Chemistry (AS/A2)
Chemistry A’ Level is a highly successful course that is very popular subject with students. Many of our pupils have gone on to study chemistry, medicine, pharmacology, biochemistry in university.
We follow the OCR AS / A2 syllabus with pupils gaining an AS at the end of Year 12, with the option of continuing to A2 in Year 13.

OCR A’ Level Chemistry – specification, past papers and mark scheme.

Physics (AS/A2)
