Physical Education

The Physical Education department at Fairwater High School is situated in the Leisure Centre where we have a sports hall, gymnasium, fitness suite, full size swimming pool, dance studio, boxing suite, a full size Red Gravel football pitch, a full size football pitch, a full size rugby pitch and 2 outdoor netball courts as well as a MUGA.   In the lower school building we have 3 classrooms to teach BTEC level 2 & level 3 Sport which currently comprises of 5 IT suites 50 computers. We are a successful department and in our 2013 results 89% of year 9 pupils achieved a level 5, 41% of whom reached level 6.  In year 11, 94% of our pupils taking PE passed with 70% gaining a Merit level or above.  The success continues into year 13 with all students passing and 75% of students going to University to study Sport further.

The success is built on good teaching with interesting lessons and plenty of challenge, the schools target grade system allows us to regularly monitor progress and intervene at an early stage if needed.

PE & School Sport (PESS) & Young Leaders (AYP)

Strong links have been formed between Fairwater and its cluster of Junior school that feed into it – Greenmeadow, Coed Eva, Bleinheim Road and Henllys.  Young leaders have been delivering street dance to a group of year 5&6 students as a build-up to their Christmas play. (See photo)

We run level 2 (Key Stage 4 – Years 10 & 11) & Level 3 (Key Stage 5 – Years 12 & 13) BTEC Sports courses which adds to the existing practical knowledge of sport learnt at Key Stage 3 (Years 7,8 & 9).

These are optional courses and are highly popular with roughly a third of the year group opting to take BTEC sport at both level 2 & 3.

Please see our ‘LEARNING PAGE’ page for a full breakdown of the courses and the units studied.
