Additional learning needs
School operates a large and successful Additional Learning Needs department. This consists of three bases of support that enable pupils to access the national curriculum and experience high levels of success. The ALN staff focus on ensuring that pupils emotional needs are met and take care to nurture self-esteem and confidence in our pupils.
The Learning Resource Centre and MOVE room provides a comprehensive package of support to pupils with physical and medical difficulties. It is also the centre for additional learning programs in reading skills, spelling, handwriting skills, positive communication skills and numeracy.
The Language & Communication Base is a specialist provision for South East Wales. The resource has places for 14 pupils with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
The Fairwater Referral Unit (FRU) provides a high level of support for pupils with emotional and behaviour difficulties. Utilising external agencies such as Prevent and Communities First, the FRU provides alternative curriculum opportunities that enrich a pupil’s social and emotional development. The FRU ensures that pupils remain engaged in education and access a wide range of Level 1 and 2 qualifications.
